In a conference at LSE last week, invited panelists explored the themes and implications of the writings of prominent sociologist Richard Sennett.  In conversation with architects, academics and policy analysts, Professor Sennett led a multi-disciplinary discussion of civic space and the role it plays in the city.

The ideas of democratic space and adaptive space emerged repeatedly as key concerns in the design and planning of the city’s public realm.  Professor Sennett elaborated these concepts by stating that “the attempt to find a finished form is always self-destructive” because it immediately becomes a limited and unresponsive backdrop to constantly evolving societal needs and rhythms, and therefore tends toward the status of outdated relic.  He later reinforced this idea by characterising some spaces as “undemocratic because they are overdetermined”.

We hope to see you on the 22nd May at Legligin (Valletta), as we launch the TRANSIT URBAN ART PROJECT official publication in association with EDE books, a new art publishing venture.

PRESS TO PRINT

The final chapter of the TRANSIT Urban Art Project, always an exciting and stressfull time…the printing of the BOOK. We went to press yesterday 24th April 2012 after 4 weeks of design, set up, tests, proofreading, matchprints, publishing deals and now its almost done.

Stay tuned for the official book launch as TRANSIT also inaugurates the launch of a new series of art books by EDE books under the scrutinous eye of our publisher Zvezdan Reljic.

Living in Paris, Lucie & Simon, a duo of a french and a german photographer, have been working together since 2005.

Lucie & Simon’s projects are conceived as series, which all outsmart our perception of reality by staging a quirky view of daily life. From urban or family solitude to existential wanderings, their compositions capture different moods of man’s silent melancholy, focusing on the narrow chink between our existence and the world of dreams. In an enigmatic universe rekindling the memory of Edward Hopper’s paintings, each character seems totally absorbed by the timelessness of dreams.

The silent world is suddenly endowed with an oppressive eloquence. Is it a poetic day after an apocalypse? A fantasy of huge cities became quiet where few survivor are going for a walk in intact remains of a dead civilization.

This serie of about thirty pictures comes with a seven minutes film. The spectator get absorbed in desert places, wandering about the way we are living in our current world…

TRANSIT ON CITY GATE

As part of the final events of the TRANSIT project we have installed a public exhibition on the hoarding around the site.
Conceived as a map-like installation the panels sum up some of the main topics we dealt with during the project and invites the public to reflect on the nature of urban change and the effect it has on us.

Here is a brief extract from an interview on Carnival in Valletta with Jason Busutill.

Carnival is crucial to the life of the Maltese capital city.

An integral part of the city’s heart beat when pubic spaces come alive thanks to the passionnate and dedicated work of hundred of afficionados.

Why do Cities need public spaces?
